Homework is a vehicle that can enable the student to reinforce skills, capitalize on individual interests, strengthen teacher-child-parent relationships and improve the student's understanding. Homework assignments appropriate to the subject and grade level can be of significant value to the student's growth in knowledge and skills. Listed below are the general guidelines for average length of daily homework for students:
Kindergarten 10 minutes maximum.
1st Grade 10 minutes maximum.
2nd Grade 20 minutes maximum.
3rd Grade 30 minutes maximum.
4th Grade 40 minutes maximum.
5th Grade 50 minutes maximum.
6th Grade 60 minutes maximum.
7th Grade 70 minutes maximum.
8th Grade 80 minutes maximum.
All students’ assignments must be completed and turned-in on time before full credit will be given. Work not completed on time will have its grade reduced one letter-grade equivalency per day, up to three days. After three days, the grade will be recorded as a zero. Incomplete work will be recorded as an "I" until the work is completed. After three additional days, the grade "I" will be recorded as a zero.
Work not completed due to an absence from school, must be completed upon returning to school. For each day a child is absent from school, one day should be allocated to them to make up their assignments. Parents are encouraged to request homework assignments for students who are ill for several days or are going to be gone for other reasons.
When the school provides the students with assignment notebooks, the use of the assignment notebooks is mandatory (grades 3 – 8) and it is the responsibility of the teacher to check daily whether the parents have sign off on the completion of the work.
