5 steps for building responsibility and self esteem
in Children
Whether you goal is to have them get better grades, do their chores, or work as part of a family team, these steps can help kids develop their potential:
1. Prepare in advance. When giving a task, be very specific about what you expect. Ask them to repeat it to make sure that they understand.
2. Have kids write their assignments, practices, and extracurricular activities on calendars in different colors of ink.
3. Be specific with kids about the limits of their authority and what decisions they can - or cannot – make on their own.
4. Set check points for long term tasks to make sure they are staying on track.
5. Have a wrap-up session after a large project has been completed. Discuss what went
well and what could be done better next time. Celebrate everyone’s success.
